ABOUT GLOBE

Globe gets its name from its mining history. It began with silver and the find of a large ball of silver in the shape of a globe.

Local artist, Laurie Manzano, painted this scene of downtown Globe to celebrate the city’s sense of community. Several people in the painting are actual citizens, with interesting stories. Some of the buildings are no longer standing, due to fire, but she has captured life in a rural town.

Laurie was born in Buffalo, New York, but worked in California for a time before coming to Globe. In California, she captured life with migrant workers and continues to focus attention on the everyday lives of people with some subtle social commentary, using her magical style. She and her husband, John Stahlnecker, were also instrumental in salvaging the Courthouse and turning it into the Cobre Valley Center for the Arts.

THINGS TO DO IN THE GLOBE-MIAMI AREA

Owned and operated by the City of Globe, this historical museum displays remnants of the ancient Salado civilization.

Established in what was once a Mine Rescue Station, the Gila County Museum offers an extensive search library and a variety of historical artifacts.

Inaugurated in 1923 as the Bullion Plaza School, the historic building was converted into the Bullion Plaza Cultural Center and Museum, a non-profit organization, in 1997 after being purchased by the Town of Miami.

“You won’t believe what’s inside!”

This is the statement visitors to this 8000 sq. foot historical building are greeted with, and it is truly an understatement. Originally a warehouse constructed in the early 1900’s, converted to an antiques store in the 1990’s to its final makeover in the 2000’s by the current owners, the current establishment boasts of an incredible retail store that displays local Native American art and handicrafts, jewelry, giftware and home decor.
